Lynne Cheney on Fresh Air

Wow. I just finished listening to Terry Gross interview Lynne Cheney. All I can say is, "What a bitch." Lynne Cheney, I mean. Terry Gross is wonderful. If anyone can tactfully ask sensitive issue questions--and yet not be too acquiescing--it's Terry.

Although they talked mainly about Ms. Cheney's children books, Terry did broach the subject of gay marriage. Terry was very careful not to ask directly about the Cheney daughter, but asked questions in terms of parents of gay/lesbian children. I realize that there are limits and what the wife of the V.P. can say. She can't step too out of line from party rhetoric. But Ms. Cheney was just soooo icy rude.

Terry was noticeably and understandably taken aback. She moved on to talk about a novel Ms. Cheney had written in the early 80s. This book is out of print and not easy to find, which Terry mentioned up front, but she asked questions about the heroine and her lesbian leanings. You would have thought that Terry accused Ms. Cheney of writing a book advocating Satanism. Her main answer (oft-repeated) "I wrote a bad novel."

I was amazed. Of course any spin will revolve around Terry's "rudeness" to the Lady V.P. But I would say that Terry was as respectful as a journalist can be. Ms. Cheney was the rude one.

Aside:
Don't think I'm ignoring Bush's proposed budget. I just need the time to sit down and properly write my rants and criticisms (I've got a copy of an article from The Globe that I snatched from the train last night which I think will be very helpful).
