Supreme Court Nomination

Work has been quite demanding of late, although since the board meeting is happening as I type, I would guess it will taper off a bit (especially as there is no board meeting--nor "institutional advancement" meeting next month). I was asked to come in early today (the same as yesterday, so I could assist my super with using the new "bat phone" a.k.a. conference call phone) in case there was any last minute preparations before the board meeting. However, even though I woke up late (I think the heat has really slowed me down) I still got here before my super, who squeaked in under the wire, two minutes before the start of the meeting.

Of course the big news today is Bush's announcement of his choice to replace Sandra Day O'Connor (it's a pity she's retiring, but as her husband is in very poor health, it's understandable). John Roberts is reportedly "one of the best legal minds of his generation," according to the President. His limited record as a judge is not my ideal. His interpretation of the constitution is a bit conservative for me (how could the founding fathers predict the issue of abortion? Or the issue of endangered animal protection?)

I'm very sorry not to see a (reasonable) woman replace Sandra Day, as are many people, including the First Lady. But as the right was clamoring for many more overtly conservative nominees, I cautiously take this nomination as acceptable.

If Ann Coulter rips the guy in her new column (see Drudge Report), you can be fairly certain he is an okay candidate.

In other news, I am going to hang out with Rebecca to discuss radical fundamentalist Judaism. Do you want to come?
